Journal cuts 13 employees, eliminates 10 other jobs

The Winston-Salem Journal announced 13 job cuts yesterday as part of a continuing effort to reduce costs in a weak and unstable economy.

Including vacancies, 23 positions were eliminated out of a full-time staff of 260. The Journal also has about 85 part-time employees.

The job cuts affect the newsroom, production, advertising, circulation and finance departments. Two newsroom staffers were let go, and three vacant positions won’t be filled.

The affected employees will receive severance packages.

Media General requiring 10 days of unpaid furlough

Media General Inc., the owner of the Winston-Salem Journal, said yesterday that it will furlough all employees for 10 days without pay this year as it tries to reduce costs in the face of a deteriorating economy.

Foxx Pushes Bill to Cut Wall Street Bailout in Half

Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., introduced a bill Wednesday to cut in half the $700 billion Wall Street bailout package.

Under the program, which was designed to shore up the financial system by allowing the government to purchase toxic mortgage-backed securities, the Treasury Department has injected nearly $290 billion into troubled banks.
