This past weekend, I got the rare opportunity to see the Washington, D.C., in a rare way that few people get to experience. I got to see the inner workings of our government up close and personal.

This weekend was an especially good time to visit because Congress was in session debating what is one of the most hotly debated issues of our time, the health care reform bill.

Now before I go any deeper, please understand that as a reporter for a small-town newspaper my political views are neutral. I went to Washington with an open heart and mind.

McHenry, Foxx question czar count

August 11, 2009

By Jim McNally | Statesville R&L

Published: August 12, 2009

Both of Iredell County’s Congressional representatives believe the present White House has gone czar crazy.

While top aides actually have more official sounding titles, the term “czar” has been used since the Nixon administration as a shortcut for the top person on a policy, issue or department.

In response to a question from the audience about the matter at his town hall meeting in Mooresville on Monday night, Rep. Patrick McHenry said President Barack Obama had added so many new top aides that he couldn’t keep count of them.

Healthcare Debate, Part 4

July 30, 2009

Rep. Virginia Foxx: “There Are No Americans Who Don’t Have Healthcare,” Story by Justin Grimes

More than 2,700 uninsured people were treated over 2.5 days in Wise, Va.In part one of our ongoing series on the state of healthcare in the High Country, “Volunteer Healthcare Providers Saving Lives and Needing Assistance,” we reported that the Community Care Clinic—a volunteer healthcare provider organization that treats people without insurance or the financial means to see a doctor—is booked up two months in advance, turns people away regularly and has initiated a fundraising campaign in order to increase its services. In part two, “A Local Cost Conundrum,” 17 percent of people in North Carolina reported not visiting a doctor due to the expense. In part three of the series, “Primary Care Saves Lives and Money,” High Country hospital officials warned us of the extraordinary emergency room expense incurred when patients who do not have access to primary healthcare turn up at the emergency room with exacerbated conditions.

NEWS ROUNDUP

U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-5) cosponsored the Improving Health Care for All Americans Act (H.R. 3218) a bill that Foxx says will dramatically expand Americans’ access to health insurance.

“Our healthcare system is in need of reform,” Foxx said. “This legislation addresses the serious gaps in health insurance coverage that exist for many families. Foxx added that by creating tax credits for uninsured families and new Individual Membership Associations Congress will help make healthcare more affordable and portable.
According to a statement by Foxx, the bill promotes three different policy changes:

• First, it creates a health insurance tax credit of up to $2,500 for individuals and $5,000 for families.

• It also expands insurance options and access to health insurance by creating Individual Membership Associations (IMAs). IMAs would expand insurance coverage by allowing groups like trade associations, churches and other civic groups to offer affordable insurance to their members.

• Finally, H.R. 3218 provides federal incentives for states to create high risk insurance pools for Americans who have difficulty securing health insurance.
