Foxx Wins Congressional Debate

Ashe County, NC — Today Congresswoman Virginia Foxx debated her opponent at a public forum in Ashe County. In the debate, Foxx highlighted her fiscal conservatism and her vision to get North Carolina back to work. She also exposed her opponent’s extremely liberal views on taxes, government spending, and health care.

Voters know that there is just one proven conservative in this race—and that’s Virginia Foxx. Today’s debate illustrated that Virginia embraces common sense conservative ideas like reducing government spending, keeping taxes low and slashing job-killing federal red tape.

But the debate also exposed how out of step her opponent, Billy Kennedy, is with North Carolina voters. He supports big government programs like the trillion dollar health care bill, a job-killing energy tax and the failed stimulus program.

The choice this election is between strong conservative values or Washington’s failed liberal policies. Unfortunately Virginia’s liberal opponent would be a rubber stamp for big-government policies that mean more government, more debt and less freedom. In fact, Kennedy can’t stop talking about all the new spending he supports. North Carolina simply cannot afford to send big spenders like Kennedy to Washington.

Virginia is working to keep America the land of the free and a country of opportunity for everyone. And she isn’t afraid to take on the liberals who run Washington. As today’s debate made clear, Virginia Foxx is a conservative voice that North Carolina families and small businesses can depend on.

RALEIGH — North Carolina’s three centrist Democrats scored in single digits on new congressional rankings that judge how well lawmakers protected taxpayers’ interests in 2009.

U.S. Reps. Heath Shuler, D-11th, and Mike McIntyre, D-7th, scored 8 percent and 5 percent, respectively, in the rankings by the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste, a conservative group based in Washington, D.C. Shuler and McIntyre are members of the Blue Dog Coalition, an alliance of House Democrats who claim to be “independent voices for fiscal responsibility and accountability.”

Rep. Larry Kissell, a Democrat representing the 8th Congressional District, isn’t a member of the coalition but has parted company with party leaders several times during his year-and-a-half in the House. He garnered 5 percent on the scorecard. Read the rest of this entry »

Foxx-sponsored bill would extend home-loan benefits

More surviving spouses of veterans will be available for Veteran’s Affairs home loans under a bill now making its way through Congress.

The Disabled Veterans’ Surviving Spouses Home Loans Act, was introduced by Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., to fix what she describes as a loophole in veterans’ benefits.

VA loans are intended to help veterans or active-duty personnel buy and maintain homes. They can currently be granted to surviving spouses only if the service member’s death is determined to be directly connected to service disability.

But Foxx said service-related disabilities can often be factors contributing to deaths, even if doctors don’t directly attribute them as the cause.

NRCC Honors Rep. Virginia Foxx with Ronald Reagan Award

March 31, 2010

North Carolina Republican Awarded at Annual March Dinner

Washington- The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) surprised Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) with the 2010 Ronald Reagan award at Tuesday’s annual March Dinner. Foxx was honored for her hard work and dedication as a leader of the Republican Party. The Ronald Reagan Award is chosen annually, based on a Member’s exemplary leadership in following Reagan’s timeless principles – strong national defense and fiscal conservatism. As an outspoken conservative, Virginia Foxx has served as a shining example since she first came to Congress in January 2005. In only a year after coming to Washington, Foxx ushered in the Hero Act for American Troops and was the first in her class to have a major bill signed into law.

“Congresswoman Virginia Foxx is one of the strongest team members that we have in the Republican Conference,” said NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions. “Virginia works hard for her country. She stands as a model conservative, inspiring others to partake in the great experiment of democracy. This year, we salute Congresswoman Virginia Foxx, a tireless advocate and patriot in the mold of President Ronald Reagan.”

In a tribute video unveiled at the March Dinner, fellow members of Congress spoke about Foxx’s leadership within the Republican Party, citing her focus and commitment to winning back the majority.

Foxx announces plans to run for re-election

January 28, 2010

via: http://twitter.com/foxxforcongress

Clemmons, NC—Congresswoman Virginia Foxx today announced that she will run for reelection for North Carolina’s Fifth Congressional District. Foxx has represented the Fifth District in Congress since 2005.

“Representing the people of North Carolina’s Fifth District in Congress is a great honor, Foxx said. “During this era of record deficits I promise to continue to hold Washington accountable and rein in its reckless spending and wasting of taxpayers’ hard-earned money.

Foxx is a strong proponent of keeping taxes low and ensuring that the government lives within its means. Last year Foxx opposed the bank bailouts, the auto bailouts and other massive spending programs like the trillion dollar stimulus package.

Washington needs a strong dose of North Carolina common sense,” Foxx said. “North Carolinians are looking for someone who will stand up to the big-spending ways of Washington and who will offer solutions that solve problems without growing government and creating debt. As a small-government conservative, I have a proven track record of fighting to preserve freedom and keep big government at bay.”

During her third term Foxx successfully shepherded a bill through Congress to improve on-base housing for soldiers in the Army. Her bill to stop the 2008 bank bailout also passed the House last January.

This past weekend, I got the rare opportunity to see the Washington, D.C., in a rare way that few people get to experience. I got to see the inner workings of our government up close and personal.

This weekend was an especially good time to visit because Congress was in session debating what is one of the most hotly debated issues of our time, the health care reform bill.

Now before I go any deeper, please understand that as a reporter for a small-town newspaper my political views are neutral. I went to Washington with an open heart and mind.
